CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
The Epiphany
The next morning, Mario went back into their stateroom to find Taylor folding and packing clothes into suitcases that were lying open on the bed. Her face looked drawn and sullen. Her eyes were red. He sat back in a chair, put his legs on the bed and said nothing for a long while, then said “Going somewhere?”
“Back to Boston.”
“Is that your idea, or are you doing it because you think that’s what I want?”
“Don't you?”
“No.” He got up and walked over to where she was standing and started to carefully return her clothes to the closet. She sat down. When he finished he took a bottle of brandy and two small glasses from the bar and placed them on the table. Taylor knew very well what this meant. It was his way of saying they were about to have a serious conversation. He sat down and poured some in his glass and slid the bottle in her direction. She could take it or leave it. “No. I just kept putting it off. 'Not now, later,' I would say.”
“Why didn't you tell me that day when we were comparing our pasts? By then I was certain that you were hiding something big from me. I was trying to get you to let me in on it. It was the right time.”
“I wanted to then and many other times, but I was afraid that…well...”
“Say it.”
“That you would push me out of your life.”
“No. And I hope that it never comes to that. But right now I want to hear it from you. Everything. I want to know what happened at the academy. Taylor, or should I say Jenny, I want to know who you really are. I don't see how we can have a future together until we regain our trust in each other.”
“You’re angry and you have a right to be, but your anger and…the…the hostility I feel coming from you is making me feel like a criminal on the witness stand being cross-examined. You said that you want to work through this, but how can you expect me to want to honestly tell you about a most horrific time of my life if you keep
